Potluck It

Hey.

So I think I should further explain how much cheaper the potluck idea would work. Here's the breakdown I've come up with:

There are roughly 40 of us. And we are estimating about 700 people to come to this event (that's the number we came up with in class today).
If each person cooks for 18 people we will have enough food.
We can decide on 5 items to make. Then have 5 groups of 8 make the dishes (meaning all the people in one group will make the same item).
As far as expenses are concerned, I am estimating about $20 a person which totals to $800.

So with $20 and an hour or two of your time, we could have simple homemade opening.

As far as suggestions for what to make:
Cookies
Brownies
Baked Ziti
Wraps
If any vegans, vegetarians have special dishes that are easy to make in bulk PLEASE let me know. I know nothing of the sort.

Let me know what you all think.
I don't think it should be shot down so quickly because it causes you to work a few more man hours. If everyone pulls their weight and gets it done, it could be really great.

ALSO: I'd add another $100-$150 for the little things: Utensils, Warmers (those little flame things under the food that needs to keep hot), Tray Holders, Napkins, Drinks. The first three items can be bought at Amazing Saves for pretty cheap, or even the dollar store. Napkins and Drinks could be bought by someone who has a costco/sam's membership card.

So all in all we are talking about $1,000 at the most for a fully prepared opening. Pretty cheap.

  1. I like the idea, but I'm just wondering if we can actually pull it off. I am confident that I could make it work, but I can only speak for myself. Everyone has to do this in addition to studying for finals and setting up our work for the show. As a group, can we really pony up to save $1,000 or does it make more sense to hire a caterer and raise the extra money needed?

  2. Well the show would be up by the 20th, which leaves two days to cook. And exams begin on May 6th (the last day of classes in May 3rd).
I understand your concern for people pulling their own weight, but I think if they want to have a good opening they need to understand that everyone needs to do it. I mean they are getting $20 to do their work - and if the work doesn't get done then they will get in trouble for wrongly using the money.

But it's just my opinion. Maybe I have too much hope in people. If the catering seems easier (which is does) and makes more sense then let's do it that way. I'm pretty open to whatever, just trying to save money.

  3. I'm all for a potluck, but with a group of 40 something people there is too much potential for disaster ! If we want to do this we should probably just have a handful of people do the cooking, not everyone.

  4. I am all for the potluck. If the people are getting the money to pay for whatever they are cooking n it will only take a hour of their time. This doesnt seem like too much to ask of everyone. Yea we will have finals n installing our show, but doing a potluck will save us soo much money and everyone has to think bout all the time we will save not having to fundraise.

I personally kinda suck at cooking. If we do a potluck, can I just get like a party tray of chinese food and tooth picks? If its more than the money supplied to me I will fund the rest bc it means I dont have to cook.

  5. Potluck I think is an okay idea upon hearing, but I think there's too many variables that just make it not worth the effort.

    1. Schedule - everyone has their own things to worry about, finding time to cook in between may be too difficult for some.

    2. Quality of food - now I'm not saying anyone's a bad cook, but I wouldn't want our audience to all of a sudden to feel sick all of a sudden and then blame it on the food; because then it's on our heads for serving it to them. In comparison it could be catered food that they choked on or something, and we wouldn't have to worry about it except for blaming it on our caterers.

    3. Professionalism - now this one may sound silly to some of you, but for a BFA thesis, and probably most everyone's first official exhibition, we want this opening as professional as we can make it. To serve the public with food made by us in my honest opinion defeats that purpose. I don't know, I might just be the only person who thinks so.

So with that I'd say to go with catering services. It may be costly, but it'll make our lives a whole lot easier.

  6. lets do the potluck and advertise it as a performance piece that the audience can partake in. If Yves Klein can get a bunch of people to drink a strange blue substance I'm sure we can get people to eat chicken nuggets. Plus people come to these things for the food. even if they are tostitos chips.

  7. I vote that we dont pander to the vegan crowd. There are trees and bushes outside, so why even provide food for them?
